February 2011 Wrestling Update

Wrestling practice has been going well, in the room and at tournaments you can see that our guys are making good progress on being fundamentally sound, our singles and standups are looking really good when they use them! I was at the 9th grade state tournament last weekend and during the finals saw singles and doubles more than anything else, the basic skills these kids are getting will carry them far if they work hard on perfecting them.

MN/USA:
We had at least 15 Farmington wrestlers in Cannon Falls this weekend for an MN/USA qualifier and everyone wrestled very tough. MN/USA is one of the "post season" tournaments that we have talked about in previous emails, it requires a $30 membership, details for the folkstyle event can be found at: http://mnusa.wrestlingsystems.com/ We have 30 rooms booked at the "Best Western Soldier Field" in Rochester for that Friday and Saturday night. If you wish to use one call down there (507-288-2677) and tell them you're with Farmington wrestling and switch a room reservation to your name. Everyone who gets a room chips in for 1 extra "community" room so that people can hang out there without disturbing the wrestlers while they get a good night sleep. If everyone chips in it should be pretty cheap, I'm not sure on exact cost.

NYWA:
Another option if you'd like to compete in end-of-the-year wrestling is NYWA. Their program requires a $12 membership and their qualifying procedure is a little different than MN/USA. In NYWA you need to go to one of 20 district qualifying events where the top 2 at each make it to one of 6 region events where the top 3 (plus one wildcard to make a 16 person bracket) qualify for the state tournament. This is generally a well run tournament and one of the regions is in Lakeville but keep in mind that many of the coaches will be at MN/USA and the dates conflict so you may have to coach your own kids. More information can be found at: http://www.nywa-mn.com/

Board Meetings:
The Farmington Wrestling Club Board meets on the first Monday of every month at 8:00pm. We have been meeting at Celts in Farmington and will do so again this month. These are open meetings and can be a good way to find ways to help the club out. While kids are not specifically dissallowed given the time and place the meetings are held nobody brings them and it helps keep the meetings moving.

Sample Open Tournament Signup

This is a sample printout of what we will hang in the wrestling room on Tuesday nights. If you're planning to attend a weekend tournament put your wrestlers name on the sheet and check if you can help coach. If you're wondering where to go check the sheet to see where some of the other kids are going!

What to expect at a youth wrestling tournament

This is some general information for parents wondering if their kids are ready for a wrestling tournament or what to do if you decide they'd like to try.
